The Firereel Film Festival is the brainchild of husband and wife duo - Matt & Joy Thayer, based out of Redding, CA. Our mission is to champion filmmakers in every stage of the filmmaking process. From novice to seasoned, we provide the opportunity for story-tellers of all ages to showcase their talent, refine their craft, and entertain others through the lens of a filmmaker. FFF is approaching its 5th season, draws a crowd of 1200+ annually, and is the largest Film Festival in Northern Cal. The Thayers also own a local film company - Speropictures - which is slated this year to help produce Redding’s first feature film.
Beyond making and showing films, Matt & Joy and their team are committed to pouring into the community, to help birth the next generation of filmmakers. This is our 5th year of developing and facilitating advanced film curriculum for students and the community. Last summer we held a film camp for high school students, and this summer we’re working to put together one exclusively for high school girls, taught by women. This year our festival is slated for early September where we are looking to highlight women in film. In addition, we have some major surprises planned including holding a hands on workshop with an industry professional. These are just a few of the initiatives and highlights related to the Firereel Film Festival.
Our mission is to bring in culture and entertainment from around the world, to provide a venue for filmmakers of all ages to share their stories, and to bring cultural and economic transformation to our city. We want to establish Redding as a “hub” of filmmaking, attracting talent from all over the country and the world. We are partnered with local agencies like Film Shasta to bring exposure and awareness of the amazing natural landscapes and resources Northern California has to offer. We are quickly growing to become the "Sundance of the North State".
